Florida Reports 1,317 New Cases Of Coronavirus

Florida health officials reported 1,317 new cases of the coronavirus Wednesday, the most in any 24-hour period in recent weeks.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida health officials reported 1,317 new cases of the coronavirus Wednesday, the most in any 24-hour period in recent weeks. Florida has a total of 58,764 confirmed cases throughout the state.

Twelve Florida counties reported 35 new deaths Wednesday compared to 71 new deaths Tuesday, seven on Monday, two on Sunday, 34 new deaths on Saturday, 49 new deaths Friday, 45 deaths Thursday and 61 deaths last Wednesday.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis told reporters Wednesday that none of the deaths involve children under 18 as he announced that bars, tattoo parlors, movie theaters and other shuttered businesses would reopen on Friday in most parts of the state.

"There have been more COVID-related fatalities over age 90 than the total number of COVID fatalities that have occurred in Florida under the age of 65," DeSantis stressed. "As you talk about the bulk of say our working-age population, the risk is much lower, and the data demonstrates that."

Miami-Dade reported nine new deaths Wednesday. Palm Beach County reported eight new deaths. Broward County reported one new death.

Hillsborough County reported three new deaths as did Charlotte County and Clay County. Polk County reported two new deaths as did Volusia County.

Alachua County reported one new death as did Baker County, Escambia County, Lee County,

Health officials also reported 113 new hospitalizations over the previous 24-hour period. The state's total death toll from the virus rose to 2,566 from 2,530 a day earlier.

Miami-Dade reported 18,456 confirmed cases of the virus Wednesday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 7,339cases. Palm Beach County, which includes West Palm Beach, reported 6,477cases.

Florida had a 5.4 percent positive test rate for the virus based on a total of 1,081,825 tests that had been administered as of Wednesday. The number of hospitalizations in Florida increased to 10,525 from 10,412 a day earlier.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 2,384 cases. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 2,121 cases.
