Nickel coating eases part release

Bales Mold Service has developed a new electroless nickel coating called Nicklon, which enables better part release and longer mold life. Unlike more common autocatalytic nickel and topical PTFE coatings that can degenerate over time as the PTFE breaks down and topcoat wears off the mold surface, this new coating?s homogeneous distribution of autocatalytic nickel and PTFE (between 22 and 24 percent) continually renews the PTFE as the mold surface sustains normal wear.

Nicklon?s blend gives the mold a low-level cohesion of friction so part release is enhanced, making it especially suitable for thin-wall applications such as cellular phone manufacturing. It improves release with PVC, K-resin, polypropylene, flexible vinyl, nylon, polystyrene, ABS, and polyurethane. The best applications include straight, no-draft cores and cavities, deep ribs, bosses, or EDM surfaces.

Polished molds are sent to Bales, where they are dipped into vats full of the Nicklon coating. Pricing varies depending on specific applications.
