Jurassic World’s future beyond Dominion sealed

JURASSIC WORLD fans are gearing up for the release of Dominion on June 10, 2022. Some are already casting their minds forward, wondering about the future of the franchise. The fourth instalment has finally been addressed, but is it the good news audiences are hoping for?

The Prologue - Jurassic World Dominion

When Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park first hit cinemas in 1993, its visual effects and sweeping story left audiences in awe. Two sequels and 22 years later, fans came flooding back to soak up the spectacle once more with 2015’s Jurassic World directed by Colin Trevorrow. It was an immense hit, taking home a staggering $1.67 billion at the global box office. Its sequel, 2018’s Fallen Kingdom did similarly well, earning a massive $1.31 billion. As such, the third instalment, Dominion, is highly anticipated, but all signs point to more to come from the dinosaur saga.

Spielberg’s original Jurassic Park kicked off a trilogy, with the film leading into 1997’s The Lost Worlds: Jurassic Park and 2001’s Jurassic Park III. Jurassic World worked as both a direct continuation and a reboot, pleasing fans of the originals and newcomers alike.

It is now one of the biggest franchises of all time, and in Hollywood, that can mean only one thing – more sequels.

In a recent interview, Frank Marshall, the producer on all three films in the World Trilogy, has teased that there is plenty more to come from the dino-adventures. Dominion sees the ancient reptiles beyond the borders of the park, now roaming free across the globe and terrorising campers, moviegoers and everyone in between.

This was first teased in the short film 2019’s Battle at Big Rock, an eight-minute film that bridges the gap between Fallen Kingdom and Dominion. The latter of which Marshall already hinted wouldn’t be the end, he said: "The dinosaurs are now on the mainland amongst us, and they will be for quite some time, I hope." (via Collider)

Now he has echoed that sentiment in a new interview with /Film in which he reveals that Dominion may be the end of the trilogy, but not the franchise.

He explains: "I think that 'Dominion's' going to wrap up this trilogy, but we're not resting on our laurels. We're going to sit down, and we're going to see what the future is. We have that wonderful series, Camp Cretaceous, on Netflix. We obviously want to make quality, good movies with great storytelling, great writers and directors, but we're definitely looking to do more in the 'Jurassic' world."

Camp Cretaceous is an ongoing Netflix series with four seasons already under its belt. Aimed for children, it shows the scope of the mega-franchise.

Trevorrow is back to direct Dominion after working on the first film in the World Trilogy. He left Fallen Kingdom to JA Bayona at the helm while he produced. Despite having the opportunity to direct the sequel, he wanted to leave it up to another filmmaker.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Trevorrow explained: “Honestly, it's because I love it. I don't really have a better answer than that. I've been very fortunate to be involved in a lot of different kinds of stories, and after working with J.A. on the last film, that was inspiring for me in its own way, to see how another filmmaker interpreted that middle chapter of the story. I was genuinely moved by the experience. I was going through a tough time myself. So to dive back into this world of dinosaurs with another filmmaker and make something we believed in, it made me want to finish what we started.”

The main plot of Dominion is being kept under wraps, though the director has given some details away. He said: "We really wanted to create a world where we could address this conflict in a way that feels closer to the conflicts that we have now, which is that they're not simple, and things go wrong.” (via /Film).

Both Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt will be leading the cast again as Claire Dearing and Owen Grady, respectively. They will be joined by the stars of the original 1993 hit - Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill and Laura Dern.
