PHOENIX, AZ — Arizona is putting a temporary hold on emissions testing for vehicle owners 65 and up for up to a year amid the spread of the coronavirus. The decision is meant to help reduce the risk of seniors being infected with the virus.

The announcement game from Gov. Doug Ducey and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.

The waiver means if an emissions test is required, seniors can renew their vehicle registration online through the Arizona Department of Transportation.

"Arizona remains focused on proactively limiting the spread of COVID-19," Ducey said in the release. "This latest action is informed by guidance from public health experts. People over age 65 are at higher risk of serious illness from COVID-19, and this is another way Arizona can help encourage social distancing and protect the health of our seniors."

Applications for emissions test waivers are being accepted for registration renewals due for March, April and May.
