EUREKA, Juab County — A wildfire burning in a remote area of Utah's west desert is now 95% contained, authorities said Tuesday.

The Goat Springs Fire is burning in the Simpson Mountain Range west of Eureka in Juab County, according to state and federal fire officials with Utah Fire Info.

As of Tuesday, the human-caused fire has burned 444 acres, fire officials said. Crews reached 50% containment on the fire Monday.

Local fire crews took over command of the blaze Tuesday from state and federal firefighters, officials said. Crews will continue mopping up and doing rehab work throughout the week, though smoke from the fire may still be visible.

On Monday, airborne fire crews helped extinguish hot spots and establish containment lines around the blaze, according to Utah Fire Info. Crews will continue mopping up the fire area and will begin rehab efforts Monday, officials said.

The fire was first reported about 1 p.m. Friday and destroyed two cabins and spread 40 acres before crews arrived. Steep, rugged terrain in the area and wind gusts allowed the fire to spread quickly.

The fire has been ruled as human-caused, but the exact cause is still under investigation.
