POCATELLO — The Portneuf Valley Audubon Society’s Thursday meeting will feature “Searching for New Plants at the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness” by Dr. Paul Allen, and its Sept. 21 field trip is to the Camas National Wildlife Refuge for “Birds, Bugles and Brunch.”
This September meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the Marshall Public Library Community Room.
Dr. Allen spent time exploring this magnificent and expansive wilderness while searching for new plants.
The public is invited to learn about these efforts and see images of this beautiful area of Idaho and some of its many botanical wonders.
For the Sept. 21 field trip, Friends of Camas is again sponsoring a hayride to hear elk bugle, check out fall bird migrations and a free breakfast/lunch at the refuge. Other activities include bird walks, youth activities, invertebrate discovery and pollinator garden tours.
It is a 1.5-hour drive to the refuge. Those wanting to carpool can meet at 7 a.m. in the lower Idaho State University Campus parking lot by the bison sculpture behind the Idaho Museum of Natural History. For those who want to attend the first hayride at Camas National Wildlife Refuge at 8 a.m., you should leave a little earlier.
During this summer’s Birdathon held in June, 10 people birding for Portneuf Valley Audubon Society found a total of 143 species, and thanks to the generous donations of our membership and community, supporters made over $2,000.
The efforts of these birders and their generous supporters have helped the Portneuf Valley Audubon Society to contribute nearly $11,000 since 2013 to local research and conservation efforts, providing the opportunity for real science about local species and issues in a fact-challenged world.
With some of these funds, the PVAS board voted to give $1,000 to ISU doctoral student Jon Dudko to help him complete his study titled Effects of Recreational Trail Networks on Wildlife in the Mink Creek Drainage.
