Dodgers place Ryu on IL, summon top pitching prospect Dustin May
The Los Angeles Dodgers placed baseball's ERA leader, Hyun-Jin Ryu, on the 10-day injured list with neck soreness Friday.
In corresponding moves, the Dodgers selected the contract of prized right-handed pitching prospect Dustin May, recalled pitcher Tony Gonsolin from Triple-A, and transferred left-hander Scott Alexander to the 60-day IL.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts only expects Ryu to miss one start, according to ESPN's Alden Gonzalez.
Ryu, a front-runner for the National League Cy Young award, owns an 11-2 record with a 1.53 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in 21 starts this season. The 32-year-old has allowed more than two earned runs in a game just once in 2019 - a seven-run outing against the Colorado Rockies on June 28 - and was the NL starter in the All-Star Game.
May, who also goes by the nickname 'Gingergaard,' will start Friday's game against the San Diego Padres.
The 21-year-old is the Dodgers' top pitching prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, and owns a 2.30 ERA in five starts for Triple-A Oklahoma City this season.
