That's a shady hack! Ashley Graham's makeup artist reveals an easy and 'very chic' trick for making your lips look bigger by lining them with brown EYE SHADOW
- Katie Jane Hughes, who has worked with a host of A-listers including Ashley, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Kate Bosworth, shared the hack on Instagram
- The New York-based beauty pro was doing a rose gold eye tutorial, and during the video she lined her lips with a Rodial cream eye shadow
- Katie, 35, who is originally from the UK, explained that you should use the eye color on the white outer line of your lips in order to make them look bigger
- She showed off the trick during a daily makeup tutorial, which also saw her showing support for Revlon, who Ashley works for as a spokesmodel
- The makeup expert told DailyMail.com that the hack works well because it isn't as obvious as overlining the lips with a lip liner pencil
Thanks to Kylie Jenner, overlining the lips in order to create a fuller-looking pout is a commonly-used makeup hack - and one that doesn't always result in the most natural-looking finish.
But now a makeup expert is revealing a 'much chicer' and more natural hack for making your pout appear larger and more pillowy using, rather interestingly, a brown eye shadow.
Katie Jane Hughes, a 35-year-old beauty pro who is based in New York, and who counts the likes of Ashley Graham, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Kate Bosworth among her clientele, shared the genius trick on her Instagram Story, before revealing a few more behind-the-scenes details to DailyMail.com.
Chic and cheerful: Makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes has revealed a genius hack for making the lips look larger by using eye shadow to line them
Spot the difference: The 35-year-old, who works with the likes of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Ashley Graham, says the results will look much more natural than when you use liner
Before and after: By blurring and buffing the natural shadow into the white rim of the lips, you can create a wider border that makes the natural lips (left) look plumper (right)
Et voila: 'You're essentially adding a kind of blurry texture to the lip line, thereby making it look fuller,' Katie revealed to DailyMail.com
In the tutorial, Katie is seen taking a small pot of the product, Rodial Eye Sculpt ($38), and lightly applying it around her lips with a small fluffy brush to create a wider lip line than her natural pout.
Sneaky: Katie lined her lips with the Rodial Eye Sculpt, a mousse-style product that is intended to create definition around the eyes
'This is my favorite trick for a fluffy bold lip that doesn't look super overdrawn,' she explained while doing a makeup tutorial for a rose gold eye look.
'I'm putting it in the kind of white rim surrounding the lip, because that's the area where it's safe to overline and not look like you've overlined.'
The product, which the brand describes as being ideal for 'enhancing, defining, and sculpting the eyes', or as a natural brow tint, comes in just one color, a 'light ashy brown' that is intended to blending into the natural shadows of the face.
Its mousse-like texture means that it is easy to apply and buff into the skin, without any worry that you will end up with a dark brown line around your lips.
After applying the shadow with a small fluffy brush, Katie then continued with her normal lip color: a Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolour in Eternity ($5.69).
Multi-use: The beauty pro, who is originally from the UK, began using the product on her lower lash line, before moving on to the lips with the same brown shade
Quick and easy: Katie shades the hack while doing a rose gold eye look tutorial on her Instagram Stories
Pucker up: After lining her lips with the eye shadow, Katie then used a Revlon liquid lipstick to color her pout
One of Katie's main clients, Ashley, serves as a spokesmodel for the brand and recently referenced the makeup pro's tricks in a tutorial posted to her own Instagram, in which she showed how to use a lip kit that she put together in collaboration with Revlon.
'Katie Jane has been working with me on my lip liner. She does this whole blending aspect and I'm going to try and do it with you today,' Ashley explained, before starting to buff her lip liner with a small fluffy brush - just as Katie did with her Rodial Eye Sculpt.
'If you blend it out... it feels juicier,' she says of the technique. 'I will go outside of the line just a bit, because, you know, an overdrawn line is kind of cute. She got the juice!'
Speaking to DailyMail.com about her simple, effective hack, Katie explained that the reason the hack 'works so well' is because it looks far more natural than a classically lined lip, which is much more blunt and severe.
'You're essentially adding a kind of blurry texture to the lip line, thereby making it look fuller, instead of drawing a hard line around the edge to make it look fuller but in a very obvious way,' she said.
'The softness adds to the full look, but with delicate tendencies as opposed to quite a hard edge. It's a much chicer way of overdrawing the lip and it's very easy to do.'
A-list favorite: Katie regularly works with Ashley Graham, and also counts Kate Bosworth and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley among her clientele
Sharp: She worked with the supermodel over the weekend, when Ashley made an appearance at Create & Cultivate
Busy bee: Her other client Rosie was also in attendance at the event, where both she and Ashley did key-note speeches for guests
The beauty pro, who is originally from the UK, went on to note that the hack is also easy to replicate even without using the same Rodial product that she relies on in her video.
In fact, Katie said that anyone with a darker skin tone should actually try the hack with the Mac Lip Pencil in Chestnut ($18), which can be blurred and buffed out in the same way using a fluffy brush.
'Using the product that I'm using, it will only work on medium to fair skin tones, and then for deeper skin tones, I would use chestnut lip pencil from Mac, but I would buff it in with a fluffy little brush,' she explained.
Lip overlining has been a popular makeup trick for some years now, having been brought into the spotlight by reality star Kylie Jenner, who initially claimed that her enlarged pout was the result of the trick when she was questioned about lip fillers back in 2014.
Although Kylie, now 21, went on to admit that she had in fact been using fillers in order to plump up her pout, the trick began to skyrocket in popularity - something that the beauty mogul later capitalized on by releasing her own Lip Kit, each of which contained a lip liner and a liquid lipstick.
However, as Katie points out, using a liner to create a perfectly-drawn edge to the lips can often look incredibly fake - and very overdone - while her hack promises to give the same plumped effect, while maintaining a very natural facade.
