Thursday was a busy day of severe weather in the DC area, with a tornado reported in Howard County, Md., tornado warnings issued for Frederick and south to Fredericksburg, and a number of reports of damaging winds.

Two gusts to 71 mph were recorded in Gainesville, Va. and in New Market, Md. along with a 66 mph gust in Fort Belvoir, Va.

The tornado that struck Howard County touched down near Glenelg, Md. at 3:20 pm. It then progressed toward Md. Rt. 32 where it snapped trees and uplifted the Facility roof of the County Maintenance building before lifting at 3:27 pm.

The track length was 4.5 miles and it was on the ground for a total of 7 minutes as it raced along at nearly 40mph. Winds were estimated at 100mph, which makes it an EF-1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale.

In addition, a second tornado has been confirmed in Frederick County, Md., earlier in the day.

This one wasn't quite as strong, an EF0 with wind speeds peaking at 85 mph, however, the path length was longer, stretching 6.5 miles total. Many trees were snapped as well as power lines along its trek eastward.

Additional storm surveys will be issued for the damage in Rockingham County, Va. and for the storm that moved from Orange into Spotsylvania County in Virginia.
