AUSTIN, TX — Three Bed Bath & Beyond stores in Texas — including one in South Austin — are among those slated to close as the company seeks to shutter its less profitable locations, officials confirmed.

Patch reached out to a company spokeswoman to see if any local stores were on the closures list. In response to an email, Bed Bath & Beyond spokesperson Jessica Joyce wrote that the Austin store at South Park Meadows was among those set to close. Elsewhere in Texas, the Copperwood stores in Houston and another in Harlingen also are on the chopping block, according to the email.

"We’re continually evolving to serve our loyal Bed Bath & Beyond customers better — whether they come to us at one of our 900+ stores or are one of the millions who shop with us online each year," Joyce wrote. "We’re giving our most popular stores a multi-million dollar face-lift and continually investing in our digital platform to give customers an even better shopping experience in store or at home. We are also closing a limited number of stores that no longer meet the standards our customers expect from us," she added before listing the imminent closure in Texas.

No specific dates when the stores would close were provided.

Although the Southpark Meadows site is slated to close, Joyce noted customers still can patronize the company's other retail locations at 5400 Brodie Lane and 1201 Barbara Jordan Blvd. Customers also can shop online at bedbathandbeyond.com.

Categorizing the chain as another victim of the "retail apocalypse," Yahoo Finance reported that Bed Bath & Beyond has lost 80 percent of its value over the past five years. An inability to adapt to the changing commerce landscape has led to its downfall, an analyst wrote.
