Coronavirus In California: What To Know Sunday, April 19

Here's a roundup of all the coronavirus developments in California as of April 19.

CALIFORNIA — More than 250 nursing homes across California have reported outbreaks of the new coronavirus, according to data released by the state Saturday.

The new information from the state Department of Health names 258 nursing facilities statewide that have confirmed at least one case of COVID-19. The worst-hit facility has been a Visalia nursing home, where at least 91 residents and 46 staff have tested positive, according to the state.

Los Angeles County accounts for more than half of the nursing homes on the list. The department's website said the list is a snapshot representing 86% of the state's 1,224 skilled-nursing facilities that have reported data within the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, more than 4,200 people experiencing homelessness have been housed in hotel rooms across California as part of an effort to get vulnerable residents off the streets, where they could be exposed to the new coronavirus, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Saturday.

The state program, Project Roomkey, was launched more than two weeks ago, with the goal of securing 15,000 hotel rooms that could house a portion of California's unsheltered population, which numbers more than 108,000. Thus far, Newsom said more than 10,000 rooms have been made available, and a partnership with Motel 6, which is setting aside 47 hotels, will free up more than 5,000 more rooms around the state.

Some cities have resisted making rooms available for the homeless, Newsom said at Saturday's news conference, urging those cities to reconsider.

"I want to encourage those cities that are blocking efforts like this to consider their actions ... in the annals of history," Newsom said. "They'll judge themselves by the extent that they helped the least among us in this incredibly important time."

On Friday, Newsom established a new task force charged with guiding the state out of a recession caused by the coronavirus. Businessman and former Democratic presidential candidate Tom Steyer and Newsom's chief of staff Ann O'Leary will co-chair the 80-member Task Force on Business and Jobs Recovery, which will also include former California Govs. Jerry Brown, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Gray Davis and Pete Wilson, former Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Walt Disney Company Executive Chairman Bob Iger.

Newsom announced the formation of the task force after confirming that the state's economy is in a recession after a decade of consecutive monthly job growth. Since March 12, roughly 3.1 million residents have filed for unemployment insurance, Newsom said.

This week has been a sobering one in the state's fight against the coronavirus. Despite signs of progress, Newsom said Tuesday that the state will need to meet six key milestones before officials will consider lifting California's stay-at-home order and reopening the economy.

Newsom's highly anticipated announcement about the state's plans did not include a timeline for when restrictions may be lifted, and life after the crisis will look much different than before. Restaurants may have temperature checks at the door and reduced seating inside, mass events will remain canceled for the foreseeable future, and stay-home orders may be reintroduced periodically if the virus begins surging back, Newsom said at Tuesday's news conference.

There were more than 746,300 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the United States and 41,379 deaths as of Sunday afternoon, according to Johns Hopkins University. 1,150 of those deaths were in California. The U.S. has the most confirmed coronavirus cases and deaths in the world.
