Sadie Norman Smith
Sadie Norman Smith, 79, passed away January 2, 2021 in Chattanooga. She was born to the late Homer Eugene Norman, Sr. and Flora Mae (Hinton) Norman.
Sadie was a native of Polk Co., Ga. When the family moved to Chattanooga in 1945,
Sadie attended Joseph B. Smith School, East 5th Street School and Orchard Knob Elementary School. She attended Howard High School the Class of 1959.
After graduating Howard, she attended a three-year diploma program at Grady Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Atlanta, GA. It was said if you had a GRADY NURSE you had a well trained nurse. Sadie functioned in various roles: Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Supervisor, Head Nurse, Staff Nurse, Assistant Head Nurse in Medical – Surgical , Nursery, Recovery and Intensive Care Units.
On graduation night from Grady Memorial Hospital in 1962, married Joe Henry Smith Sr. They shared 58 years of marriage.
Sadie worked from 1962 to 1982 at Erlanger Medical Center. She received Certificate as an Adult Medical Nurse Practitioner from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN, In 1988,
Sadie received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Sadie served her country as a member of the United States Army Reserves from 1979 to 1986 with the 377th Combat Support Hospital in Chattanooga, TN.
From 1977 to 1979, Sadie taught Health Education and Driver’s Ed at Kirkman High School.
In 1981, Sade was considered a vanguard, when she opened her own medical office on McCallie Avenue at a time when Chattanooga was not ready for a Nurse Practitioner. She developed a passion in wound care and preventive foot care.
From 1983 to 1984, Sadie worked at Metropolitan Hospital. In 1983, Sadie worked at Northwest Georgia Treatment Center.
From 1984 to 2013, Sadie worked as second shift supervisor at Moccasin Mental Health Institute in Chattanooga.
The homeless community had a special place in her heart that she volunteered her time and nursing skills from 1990 to 1993 at the Community Homeless Health Care Center.
In 1993, Sadie worked at Northwest Georgia Treatment Center - Methadone Clinic in Fort Oglethorpe.
From 2001 to 2019, Sadie formed her own business called Skin Balm, Inc. to provide a line a products to help with your skin care needs,
Sadie belonged to the following organizations:
• Master Gardeners of Hamilton County
• Chattanooga Area Nurses in Advance Practice
• Wound, Ostomy Continence Nurses Society
In addition to her parents, she was proceeded in death her brothers Homer E. Jr,, Forrest, Arthur, and Paul Norman: Sisters, Flora N. Orr, Betty N. Peeples, and Mary N. Alexander.
She is survived by her husband, Joe Henry Smith, Sr.; children: Joe Henry Smith Jr, and JoCarole Smith, both of Chattanooga and Joetta Smith of Nashville, siblings, Peggie (John) Kilpatrick, Virgil, Stormy, Bill (Hattie) Norman, all of Chattanooga, Jacqueline White, Glendale, AZ. Special Family Friends -The Sheats and the Dowells, several nieces, nephews, and host of other relatives and friends.
Sadie was a nurse for 54 years and a nurse practitioner for 37 years.
Sadie, Mrs. Johnson, and Mrs. Bennett were Den Mothers for the Boys Scouts of America for Troop 3025.
Sadie was a country music singer and made two 45 records in Nashville. The 45 records consisted of Side A – Me and Bobby McGhee and Side B – Your Cheat in Heart. Sadie had a nephew, Gene, who went to WNOO radio station and asked them to play the record. They played Side A – Me and Bobby McGhee. She got a chance to hear her music though the air waves.
Sadie will lie in state on Friday, Jan. 22, at 11 a.m. until noon in the funeral home chapel. Funeral Service will be held at noon in the Chapel of Advantage Funeral & Cremation Services, Franklin Strickland Chapel. Interment in Lakewood Memorial Gardens- East.
