Keith Dillon, 30, has been sentenced to a term of between six and 12 years in prison after pleading guilty in May to aggravated vehicular assault, second-degree assault and aggravated DWI, Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced.

Singas said that at approximately 2:24 a.m. on Jan. 1 last year, Dillon was driving his 2014 Dodge Ram at 70 mph with a blood alcohol content of .27 percent on Glen Cove Road in Greenvale. He had also taken Xanax.

Dillon struck the center median, crashing head-on into an unmarked police car that was being operated by Nassau County Police Department officer Willard Gomes. Singas noted that Dillon was traveling at full speed and never hit the brakes before the crash.

Gomes was on DWI patrol at the time of the crash, and the force of the collision pushed the car approximately 50 feet backward and rotated the car approximately 180 degrees. Dillon’s vehicle flipped over and came to a stop approximately 30 to 40 feet from Gomes’ car. Xanax and cocaine were found in Dillon’s truck after the crash.

Singas said that Gomes suffered a brain bleed, broken elbow and leg fractures which required multiple surgeries to repair. To this day, he walks with a permanent limp and cannot fully bend his left elbow or touch his face with his left hand. Gomes will require additional surgeries to regain mobility in his left arm. Dillon suffered a fractured ankle in the crash.
