Austin's House, serving Carson City's foster youth and beyond, is searching for additional Board Members
Since 2007, Austin’s House has provided emergency shelter and compassionate care for children in Northern Nevada who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. Now, they are looking for motivated community members to join their Board of Directors, to help keep the mission of Austin’s House alive.
The board consists of individuals from many different backgrounds and experiences, which helps the foundation move towards its goal of supporting and maintaining Austin’s House and it’s vision. The board is involved in making business decisions for Austin’s House, so a lot of the work involves fact-finding and collaboration with the team.
Austin’s House began out of an unfortunate necessity, to shelter children who had to be removed from their homes.
A shortage of foster homes in the rural areas meant that children were often sent far from their communities, and had to enroll in a new school. In the late 1990s, several members of CASA of Douglas County and community members came together to create a high-quality emergency shelter to serve the rural counties.
On Dec. 31, 2003, Austin’s House as incorporated under the legal name “Carson Valley Children’s Center,” and received a non-profit 501(c)3 designation in 2004. The facility was completed in July, 2007 and began accepting placements in September the same year.
Austin’s House serves not only Douglas County, but Carson City and the surrounding rural counties.
In 2005, a local teen, Austin Kirby, took his own life. His family became actively involved both personally and financially in getting the shelter built and in recognition, the shelter became known as Austin’s House. The Austin Kirby Foundation remains the shelter’s largest single donor.
Prospective board members must be able to meet a time commitment for the board meetings, which amounts to about 6 hours a month, and must be willing to attend some fundraisers.
