LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville police are investigating four homicides in the past four days.
LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said officers responded to a shooting in the 7900 block of Jonquil Drive in the Pleasure Ridge Park neighborhood at around 3:30 a.m. Monday. When they arrived, they found a man with fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
There are no suspects, and the LMPD Homicide Unit is investigating the shooting.
Mike Fryrear and his 3 children were asleep in their home when the shooting happened.
"You don't feel good about it at all, you start to think should we move, is it going to continue own this road?" he said.
Fryrear grew up in the area. He's raising his kids in a neighborhood he says he doesn't want to see change. But after the shooting, he's nervous to let them play in the area.
"I don't know the last time I saw an officer riding around the street, other than responding to a homicide that just happened at 3:30 in the morning," Fryrear said.
The shooting is the fourth homicide reported in the first five days of the month. Police charged Bryan James Bruce III with murder after surveillance video showed Bruce shooting a man multiple times on Clarion Court in the St. Dennis neighborhood July 3.
Erickah Kirby lives nearby and says when she heard the gunshots, she thought they were fireworks.
"It does kind of make you think its real. You hear the gunshots and stuff in the distance but that was right next door," she said.
“I know my area that I'm in is pretty good for the most part," Kirby said. "Things like that don’t happen around here. So it was scary to have it almost in the front yard.”
Bruce was arraigned on a murder charge Monday and pleaded not guilty. Bond was set at $250,000. A preliminary hearing is set for July 13th.
LMPD also responded to a shooting in the 900 block of Baxter Avenue in the Highlands early Sunday morning. The victim was taken to UofL Hospital where he later died. There were no suspects.
“Normally I come here to the bar to have a drink every now and then, or to eat dinner and I’m glad I wasn’t out that night," Alexander King told WHAS over the weekend.
“I don’t know why people would resort to violence," he said.
The LMPD Homicide Unit is also investigating a shooting that happened in the Portland neighborhood July 2. Police said a man was taken to the hospital in critical condition Friday after he was shot in the 1800 block of Rowan St. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office says the man, identified as 29-year old Jacob Rogers, succumbed to his injuries the following morning.
