EXCELSIOR, Wis. — Authorities have identified the woman killed in a fatal car vs. dump truck crash on a Sauk County highway last week.
According to the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 1:30 p.m. Friday on State Highway 136 west of the intersection with Excelsior Drive.
When crews got to the scene, they found the debris from the crash had completely blocked the roadway in both directions.
The driver of the car had to be extricated from her vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office. She was then airlifted with life-threatening injuries to a Madison hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
The woman has since been identified as 37-year-old Melissa Heitke of Portage.
The driver of the dump truck suffered minor injuries, according to a news release.
Authorities’ investigation revealed that Heitke crossed the centerline before the crash. Sauk County and Wisconsin State Patrol authorities are investigating the crash.
Wisconsin State Patrol, North Freedom Fire Department, North Freedom first responders, Baraboo fire and EMS, UW Medflight, and the Sauk County Highway Department helped at the scene.
