VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Health confirmed a total of 51 new coronavirus cases in the state Monday, an increase of six from the day before. State officials also announced Monday afternoon that a second person in the state has died from the coronavirus.

In Virginia, Maryland and D.C., 101 people have tested positive for the new coronavirus, or COVID-19. James City County and Fairfax County now have 10 positive cases of the coronavirus, or COVID-19, the most of any jurisdictions in Virginia. Arlington County is next in the state with nine cases.

"We are deeply saddened to hear that a man in his 70s on the Peninsula has died from COVID-19," Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said Monday in a statement. "It's important that we all look out for each other during this difficult time for our Commonwealth and our country."

The man acquired the coronavirus through an unknown source. The cause of death was respiratory failure as a result of the coronavirus, according to the Virginia Health Department.

The first person in the state to die from the coronavirus, announced Saturday, also lived in an area overseen by the Peninsula Health District. Like the second person, the first man was in his 70s and acquired the coronavirus through an unknown source. His cause of death was respiratory failure as a result of the coronavirus. Health officials still are investigating how the two men contracted the disease.

James City County falls under the jurisdiction of the Peninsula Health District, which also includes Williamsburg, York County, Newport News, Hampton and Poquoson. York County reported its first positive case of the coronavirus on Monday.

Stafford County reported its first positive case of the coronavirus, according to state health data. Mary Washington Healthcare announced Sunday night that it is treating a coronavirus patient at its Stafford Hospital. Citing patient confidentiality, the hospital said it will not give personal information about any person in its care who is being treated for the coronavirus.

The University of Virginia said Monday it has its first known positive case of the coronavirus. On its website, university officials said “a member of the University community has tested positive for the novel coronavirus.”

University health officials and administrators are working closely with the Virginia Department of Health, which is conducting a thorough investigation of potential exposures. Health officials are "following protocols to isolate this patient," the university said.

The positive coronavirus case at UVA did not show up on the Virginia Department of Health's list of coronavirus cases released Monday. Last Wednesday, UVA was the first Virginia school to announce its closure, telling students and staff that it would not be holding classes on campus for the foreseeable future and "quite possibly through the end of the semester."
