UPDATED: Train derails in Jewett City, no injuries reported

Griswold — Connecticut State Police said a train derailed Tuesday afternoon in the area of South Main Street and Railroad Avenue in Jewett City.

State police from Troop E in Montville posted on social media that no injuries have been reported.

South Main Street was closed due to the derailment and Trooper 1st Class Sarah Salerno, a spokeswoman for the state police, on Tuesday afternoon advised people traveling in the area to seek alternate routes. The road has since reopened, state police said Tuesday night.

Two railcars, which were carrying plastic pellets, and one locomotive on a Providence and Worcester Railroad train derailed about 2 p.m., said Tom Ciuba, vice president of communications for Genesee & Wyoming Railroad Services Inc.

No other vehicles or pedestrians were involved, Salerno said.

State police said they received the emergency call about 2:08 p.m. Troopers from Troop E and the Jewett City resident trooper responded, according to the state police post.

The local fire department also responded, as well as state Department of Transportation and town crews, Salerno said.

Ciuba said officials arrived on scene to clean up the derailment and clear the crossing. He said the cause of the derailment is under investigation.
