Bodies Of Father, Son Found In Neversink River

They had been missing since Saturday when a raft they were on flipped over.

GODEFFROY, NY — The bodies of the father and son missing in the Neversink River in Orange County have been found, state police said. On the third day of searching, State Police Aviation, along with forest rangers, found the bodies of Marco Avila, 46, and Marcos Avila, 9, of Queens.

Police said around 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, two young people were rafting with adult supervision on the Neversink River near the Oakland Valley Campground in Cuddebackville.

As they returned to shore, the elder Avila saw the younger Avila fall out of the raft.

He dove into the water to rescue him.

The father was able to get his son back into the raft when it flipped over.

Neither of them resurfaced, police said.

Their bodies were found in the water in the area of Shore Drive near Godeffroy in the Town of Deerpark.

State police, along with the state Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers and local law enforcement, fire departments and EMS had been participating in the search.
