Dubai: Bahrain’s public prosecution has extended the detention of Ali Salman, secretary-general of Al Wefaq Society, by another 15 days pending investigations.

Attorney General Nayef Yousuf Mahmoud said that the public prosecution on Monday continued questioning Salman on the charges to promoting political change using force and threats, as well as other charges. The public prosecution also confronted him with the content of his speeches and statements, he added.

In a statement carried by Bahrain News Agency (BNA), the attorney general said “the accused had contacts with political alliances and regime abroad and discussed with them the internal situation in Bahrain, explaining to their leaders the political reality in the kingdom”.

They agreed on the interference in Bahrain’s domestic affairs and some of the parties said that they were ready for it.

Salman did not inform any official in Bahrain about the meetings, the attorney general added.

Salman was arrested on December 28.
