Construction trades academy open to area teens

MOORHEAD — The Herdina Academy for the Construction Trades will be holding an academy session from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, June 3, through Friday, June 7, and Monday, June 10, through Friday, June 14, at Minnesota State Community and Technical College (M State), 1900 28th Ave. S.

North Dakota and Minnesota high school students ages 15 and older may enroll in the program to learn about specialty occupations within the construction industry that may include: carpentry, concrete, electrical, excavation, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), refrigeration, masonry, plumbing, print reading and more.

Students who attend will work with industry and educational professionals, learn about occupations, tools, safety requirements and skills. They will participate in classroom and hands-on learning, and will experience first-hand how residential and commercial buildings are constructed.

Cost of enrollment is $25 and is limited. Upon completion of the academy, students may earn high school credit and/or M State will transcript three college credits (BLDG 1100 basic principles of residential and commercial construction) to the student's academic record.

Scholarships will be available to academy graduates pursuing construction-related fields at M State-Moorhead or North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, N.D.
