Police are investigating after baby found dead, left next to a gutter in alley: Cops

California authorities are investigating after a passerby found a baby wrapped in a plastic bag and left in a Los Angeles alley.

Newsweek reports that police from the Los Angeles Olympic Division responded to a call a little after 5 p.m., to 7th Street and New Hampshire Avenue. When officers found the baby, they at first determined the age to be 26 weeks gestation.

A coroner, however, said the baby had hair, indicating that the infant was likely a newborn.

“Unfortunately, we have several victims here,” Warner Castillo of the LAPD said. “The mother is a victim, the child is a victim and the family members.”

KTLA reports that the baby was initially spotted by someone who said the infant was next to a gutter.

“I’d like to remind the public, our community members that California [has] a safe surrender law,” Castillo said. “A parent in custody of a newborn can surrender a child to our fire stations. That’s an option if someone becomes desperate.”

Anyone with information about the case should contact the LAPD’s Child Protection Section at 213-486-0570. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or visit lacrimestoppers.org.
