Bahrain won the gold medal in the women's 3000m steeplechase after Ruth Jebet put on a stellar performance to cross the finish line in 8:59.75s, well ahead of the other runners.

The medal ranks Bahrain at the top of the Arab countries taking part in the Olympics after the kingdom secured a silver medal on Sunday thanks to Eunice Kirwa who came second in the women’s marathon.

At the London Olympics four years ago, Bahrain won its first ever Olympic medal thanks to its middle-distance runner Maryam Yusuf Jamal in the women's 1500 metres.
