Wellard teacher to travel back in time in upcoming production

A Wellard teacher is taking a trip back in time this month as she takes on the role as a debutante in Fourteen.

Maree Stedul portrays Elaine in the 1920s play, which is one of four short productions presented under the banner of Summer Shortsat Melville Theatre.

Written by Alice Gerstenberg and directed by Carmen Dohle, the show tells the story of a New York dinner party for 14 guests that goes awry.

Mrs Stedul has been involved in the theatre for the last nine years, describing it as her passion.

“It’s also a therapy for me, as someone who has anxiety,” she said.

She had never performed in a Melville Theatre production, but jumped at the opportunity when she read this script.

“I've wanted to get involved in something there for a while but nothing had captured my attention. This looked quite fun,” she said.

The drama teacher said staying involved in the theatre allowed her to keep coming up with new ideas all the time and improving the quality of her teaching.

Mrs Stedul still gets nervous when she performs, but said it became a bit easier each time.

“If (performing is) something you’re interested in and you find you have a passion, put yourself out there so you don't regret not trying,” she said.

Mrs Stedul said the four different plays would offer something for everyone.
