Investigation launched after bald eagle found shot in Ankeny

KCCI photojournalist John Houghton took this video several bald eagles just south of the Saylorville Dam on Tuesday-- about 5 miles away from where the injured eagle was found. Officials say these cases are somewhat of a rarity-- the last one in Polk County was in January 2017- - a hiker found a dismembered eagle on the south side of Des Moines. The DNR says state and federal fines for killing a bald eagle can reach upwards of twenty thousand dollars and one year jail time. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said Tuesday that it is looking for the person responsible for shooting and killing a bald eagle in Ankeny.The Iowa DNR said it received a call from the Ankeny Police Department on Jan. 3 regarding an injured eagle near an apartment on Trilein Drive and East First Street The fully mature female bald eagle was captured but died before it arrived at S.O.A.R (Saving Our Avian Resources). Dustin Eighmy, with the Iowa DNR said X-rays showed a BB pellet lodged inside the bird. "One of the lungs was completely destroyed from that BB,” Eighmy said.Eighmy said the eagle was likely shot either Jan. 2 or 3, but officials are not sure if the shooting occurred in the area the eagle was found.State and federal fines for killing a bald eagle can reach upwards of $20,000 and one year in jail.Eighmy said he hopes that the bald eagle’s death was an accident. "I can't work with intentional,” he said. “It upsets me and angers me."Anyone with information is urged to call the TIP (Turn In Poachers) Hotline at 1-800-532-2020 or complete the confidential online TIP form.A reward is available for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible.
