Investigation launched after bald eagle found shot in Ankeny
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said Tuesday that it is looking for the person responsible for shooting and killing a bald eagle in Ankeny.
The Iowa DNR said it received a call from the Ankeny Police Department on Jan. 3 regarding an injured eagle near an apartment on Trilein Drive and East First Street
The fully mature female bald eagle was captured but died before it arrived at S.O.A.R (Saving Our Avian Resources). Dustin Eighmy, with the Iowa DNR said X-rays showed a BB pellet lodged inside the bird.
"One of the lungs was completely destroyed from that BB,” Eighmy said.
Eighmy said the eagle was likely shot either Jan. 2 or 3, but officials are not sure if the shooting occurred in the area the eagle was found.
State and federal fines for killing a bald eagle can reach upwards of $20,000 and one year in jail.
Eighmy said he hopes that the bald eagle’s death was an accident.
"I can't work with intentional,” he said. “It upsets me and angers me."
