24 new cases of COVID-19 in Northwestern Wisconsin on Aug. 2

Nine counties reported new cases Sunday.

Every county in the 10-county region except Burnett County reported new cases of COVID-19 Sunday, Aug. 2, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services .

Douglas County reported the highest number of new positive cases with 11, bringing its total to 133 cases, DHS said. Washburn County recorded five additional cases, and Taylor County added two.

Ashland, Bayfield, Iron, Price, Rusk and Sawyer counties reported one new case each.

Statewide there were a total of 54,924 positive cases of the coronavirus Sunday, DHS said, an increase of 922 from the day before. Of the tests reported, 9.6% were positive.

One additional person died from COVID-19, leaving the total number of deaths in the state at 948.

The number of negative tests in the state was 904,666, an increase of 8,721 from the day before.

Here's a breakdown of the situation in the 10-county region:

Ashland County

  • Active cases: 5
  • Deaths: 0
  • Total cases reported since pandemic began: 20
  • Total negative tests: 1,633

Bayfield County

  • Active cases: 3
  • Deaths: 1
  • Total cases reported since pandemic began: 20
  • Total negative tests: 1,799

Burnett County

  • Active cases: 4
  • Deaths: 1
  • Total cases reported since pandemic began: 14
  • Total negative tests: 1,483

Douglas County

  • Active cases: 34
  • Deaths: 0
  • Total cases reported since pandemic began: 133
  • Total negative tests: 4,395

Iron County

  • Active cases: 42
  • Deaths: 1
  • Total cases reported since pandemic began: 72
  • Total negative tests: 971

Price County

  • Active cases: 6
  • Deaths: 0
  • Total cases reported since pandemic began: 22
  • Total negative tests: 1,767

Rusk County

  • Active cases: 4
  • Deaths: 1
  • Total cases reported since pandemic began: 16
  • Total negative tests: 1,240

Sawyer County

  • Active cases: 8
  • Deaths: 0
  • Total cases reported since pandemic began: 37
  • Total negative tests: 2,569

Taylor County

  • Active cases: 26
  • Deaths: 0
  • Total cases reported since pandemic began: 52
  • Total negative tests: 1,703

Washburn County

  • Active cases: 24
  • Deaths: 0
  • Total cases reported since pandemic began: 34
  • Total negative tests: 1,763

An additional 36 people were hospitalized because of the virus Sunday, DHS reported. Overall, 8.6% of Wisconsinites who contracted the virus have been hospitalized. DHS has said it doesn't know the hospitalization history for 34% of people who tested positive.

Sunday's report showed that 80% of people who tested positive for COVID-19 have recovered.

Wisconsin's daily testing capacity was 24,156 on Sunday. An increase in the number of tests being done is one reason for the increase in the number of positive cases. The percentage of positive tests over the last several days was:

  • 8.5% on Monday, July 27
  • 5.3% on Tuesday, July 28
  • 5.9% on Wednesday, July 29
  • 6.1% on Thursday, July 30
  • 5.7% on Friday, July 31
  • 7.1% on Saturday, Aug. 1
  • 9.6% on Sunday, Aug. 2

All of Wisconsin's 72 counties have confirmed cases of the illness.
