Neuroscientists and rock musicians are not normally known to mix but the lead singer of Muse is set to change that after investing in a British start-up that is developing a mind-reading device.

Matt Bellamy, 42, has joined a small number of Silicon Valley venture capital firms in placing his money into MindPortal, a company created by two British former medical students who want to “augment the human mind”.

The company is designing a device it hopes will enable people to control computers, robots, virtual reality characters and drones with the mind alone before eventually being used to modulate mental health, boost memories and allow for telepathic communication between two people.

MindPortal was founded in 2019 by Ekram Alam, 31, and Jack Baber, 27,
