Greensboro: Operation clear track

Educating drivers about the dangers of railroad crossings

CAROLINA. HAPPENING NOW IN GUILFORD COUNTY, GREENSBORO, POLICE ARE TAKING PART IN OPERATION CLEAR TRACK. YOU’LL NOTICE MORE OFFICERS STATIONED AT THE RAILROAD TRACKS ALONG EAST MARKET STREET. THIS IS TO HELP EDUCATE DRIVERS ABOUT THE DANGERS OF RAILROAD CROSSINGS AND TRESPASSING LAWS. THE DOT SAYS YOU SHOULD NEVER WALK, JOG OR TAKE PICTURES ON THE TRACKS BECAUSE IT’S PRIVATE PROPERTY AND DRIVERS SHOULD, OF COURSE, NEVER STOP THEIR VEHICLES ON THE TRACKS. TRAINS ARE TYPICALLY MOVING AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED FOR EXAMPLE, A TRAIN TRAVELING AT 55 MILES PER HOUR, IF FULLY LOADED TRAIN TAKES APPROXIMATELY A MILE TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. AND IN AN INSTANT WHERE A TRAIN HAS TO COME TO A STOP IN A HURRY, IS JUST NOT POSSIBLE. SO FAR THIS YEAR, THERE HAVE BEEN 41 RAILROAD CROSSING CRASHES IN NORTH CAROLINA.
