Carlos Sainz is preparing for the Singapore Grand Prix by training on an exercise bike in a sauna as he prepares for the brutal heat he and his fellow drivers are expected to encounter over the weekend. And the driver expects it to be the toughest race of the year, with Pierre Gasly anticipating "extreme" conditions.

Singapore has a reputation for its extreme conditions due to the climate there, and after three years away due to Covid, racing fans are excited for the track to return. With temperatures expected to hit 30 degrees overnight – when the race will take place – only the fittest athletes will thrive.

Sainz has showcased that he is doing all he can to ensure he is in the best possible shape for the race and somewhat acclimatised to the 90 per cent humidity that is anticipated. The 28-year-old has shared a video on his Instagram of himself working on a training bike inside a sauna.

The post is captioned: “Extreme situations call for extreme measures… getting ready for Singapore!” and has accrued over 440,000 likes. Many have commented that the post has shed a light on the work that drivers put themselves through to participate in one of the toughest races of the season.

Speaking about the race, Alpine driver Gasly said: “We know it’s very extreme conditions, but it’s the track I love, honestly. I love that place, I’ve missed that place over the last few years, and I can’t wait to get there.”

While Sainz added: “It’s going to be a tough race, both mentally and physically with the bumps and the heat, the bouncing. I think it’s going to be the toughest race of the year.”

The preparation for Singapore cannot be understated and at such a vital point in the season, with Sainz fifth in the current standings, just 16 points behind Mercedes star George Russell. Max Verstappen is a runaway winner at the top of the leaderboard, though Sainz will hope that he can put the pressure on for the placings.

He has revealed that his preferred method of training is doing the triathlon, another sport that he takes a keen interest in. Sainz continued: “I like triathlon a lot, it's a sport that I practice and follow almost daily.

“In the middle of the competition season, I have it a little more abandoned, since I spend more time in the gym than on the bike, running or swimming. But I do I use it as a cardiovascular sport.”
