Massachusetts Primary Election Results

Governor

Gov. Charlie Baker, a moderate Republican, decided against seeking another term, and there is a competitive Republican primary to succeed him: Geoff Diehl, a former state lawmaker endorsed by former President Donald J. Trump, is facing Chris Doughty, a businessman and moderate. Maura Healey, the state’s attorney general, has cleared the Democratic field, making her primary a formality in this heavily Democratic state.

Maura Healey, who was a college basketball captain at Harvard and played on a professional team overseas, has often used discussion of sports in her campaigns. In her Twitter bio, she describes herself as, among other things, a “baller.”

  • Katie Glueck

In Massachusetts, with the Democratic primary for governor effectively set, the drama for Democrats is lower down the ballot, with competitive races for attorney general, lieutenant governor and possibly secretary of state.

  • Katie Glueck
    Katie Glueck Sept. 6, 2022

After Gov. Charlie Baker, a popular moderate Republican, decided against running again, Massachusetts became one of the Democrats’ best opportunities to flip a governor’s seat.

  • Reid Epstein
    Reid Epstein Sept. 6, 2022

Gov. Charlie Baker, a Massachusetts Republican who is more popular with Democrats and independents than members of his party, did not make an endorsement in the race to succeed him, while the Massachusetts Republican Party followed Mr. Trump’s lead and formally backed Mr. Diehl.

Lieutenant Governor

Three Democrats are running for lieutenant governor in the party’s primary: Eric Lesser, a state senator who worked in the Obama White House; Tami Gouveia, a state representative; and Kim Driscoll, the mayor of Salem.
