Letter: Response to Orem PTA sign dispute

By Staff | Sep 28, 2022

This is in response to the September 20, 2022, Daily Herald front page article entitled, “Stance on school district split causing a stir.”

I attended the PTA meeting held at the Canyon View Junior High School on Thursday, September 15, 2022. During that meeting, it was quite clear that the three Orem PTA Councils in the Alpine School District had taken the official position that they were opposed to the formation of an Orem School District. The position was supported by a survey previously sent out to the approximately 2000 PTA members, 65% of whom did not respond. The survey asked for personal contact information. There was at least some fear of retaliation for voting the wrong way that probably influenced the survey response.

There was also mention in the article of campaign signs saying, “Orem PTA member’s vote yes! Prop 2.”  I saw my first sign on Friday, September 16, 2022.  My immediate impression was that the campaign sign was targeting the 65% of PTA members who did not respond to the survey.  I also thought, creative, but probably not very effective.  There is no way anyone who is up on the issues would not be aware of the Orem PTA’S position.  I don’t have a sign and I have no idea where to get one for my campaign sign collection, of course. Voters need to be informed and vote.  Maybe the stir isn’t a bad thing.
