Two men were shot dead in a busy Renton shopping mall in what police are calling an apparent murder-suicide Monday afternoon.
According to Renton Police, witnesses report a person shot another person in the street around 3:00 p.m. on 10th Street in The Landing at Renton shopping center. Police say the witnesses said the shooter took their own life.
Witnesses from a nearby business told KOMO News they heard gunshots and hid in a back room until police secured the scene.
Shoppers and families like Ryan Runge said they saw police working on one of the victims after the he heard the shots rang out.
“It’s scary especially during the holidays it rocks you,” said Runge. “When the police arrived they immediately opened up his shirt looked him over and it wasn’t more than 30 seconds and they weren’t standing around him anymore which kind of made us think it was too late.”
Detectives say the men knew each other and don’t think there’s any more danger to the public, but the other concern is how public the shooting was.
Police say even one witness crashed their car while running away from the shooting.
“The bottom line is it’s a tragedy,” said Detective Robert Onishi with the Renton Police Department. “We wouldn’t wish this on anybody at any time, and again I’m just glad that aside from the tragic outcome of the two men involved that nobody else was hurt.”
Renton Police said if anyone has information on what led up to the shooting, please call them. The identities and ages of the deceased have not been released.
