Two people were shot and taken to the hospital Tuesday night in the Central District, according to Seattle police.

The Seattle Police Department said the incident occurred at 8:56 p.m. near the intersection of East Alder Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way. A witness told officers four people were shooting at each other in the street, police said.

Police said they found two victims — a 24-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man — with gunshot wounds. Seattle fire medics took both to Harborview Medical Center in "stable condition."

Police said they found multiple residences in the area with ballistic damage, and officers collected about 24 spent shell casings.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the violent crimes tip line at 206-233-5000.
