NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Metro Police have identified a possible suspect involved in a fatal shooting at an apartment complex in North Nashville.

The shooting happened at 5515 Scruggs Lane in the parking lot of Paddock at the Grandview Apartments. Police said the teenager fatally shot on Friday morning was identified through his fingerprints as 18-year-old Daryl Quintin Shannon.

Brandon Waire, 20, was charged on Friday night with criminal homicide in the case. Efforts continue to identify a second suspect. Two people, including Waire, approached a Dodge van from a silver Hyundai car shortly before 5 a.m. and fired shots, police said.

After the killing, the Hyundai drove to the Glastonbury Woods Apartments at 665 Glastonbury Road. The car was empty when officials found it. According to officials, a short time later, five people approached the car including Waire. All five were brought to MNPD headquarters for questioning.

One of the people, a 16-year-old had a pistol that officials believe was used to murder Shannon. The 16-year-old was charged in juvenile court with being an accessory to homicide, unlawful gun possession, possession of cocaine for resale and possession of marijuana.

Another person, 19-year-old Dakiyah Childress, who owns the Hyundai, was charged with tampering with evidence and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Childress allegedly altered the exterior appearance of her car by removing black duct tape from the rear bumper in an effort to prevent police from finding it.

Neighbors in that area said that shootings are a growing issue. Some have said shootings happen at that complex all of the time.

“It’s senseless,” said Shannon Bellflower, one of the apartment complex’s tenants. “It’s pointless and there’s no reason for it.”

Police found Shannon inside the van minutes after neighbors called and reported hearing gunshots. Shannon was taken to the Vanderbilt Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

“Gunshots are normal. Cops walk up all the time and ask me if I see anything whenever I’m on my balcony,” Bellflower said. “I normally don’t see anything, but I always hear something. I just can’t tell them where or what happened.”

Bellflower said she and her neighbors hear gunshots at least once a month and that the issue doesn’t seem to be getting any better.

“I’m sick of it,” said Bellflower. “I mean, it’s such a commonplace occurrence. It’s unfortunate, and I wish it wasn’t so. Shootings aren’t uncommon, and death isn’t uncommon.”

Although Bellflower said her heart breaks for the families losing loved ones, she doesn’t see any changes happening any time soon.

“There is not much to say when it’s just something that always happens all the time,” said Bellflower. “It’s just an ongoing problem.”

Homicide detectives are now looking into what led to the shooting.
