The Spider-Man universe is expanding even more, because it has been announced that a slew of live-action spinoff shows are making their way to Amazon.

According to Deadline, Sony has teamed up with MGM+ and Amazon to create a bunch of spinoffs from the over 900 Marvel characters that Sony owns the rights to, in a deal that predates Disney’s acquisition of Marvel.

The first of the shows to be announced for Amazon Prime Video is Silk: Spider Society, which has been in the works for quite some time now.

The show follows Cindy Moon, a Korean-American woman bitten by the same spider that bit Peter Parker, as she escapes imprisonment and searches for her missing family on her way to becoming the superhero known as Silk.

In the MCU, Tiffany Espensen plays this character.

The show has The Walking Dead’s Angela Kang as its showrunner and will be executive produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who are the minds behind the extremely successful Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse franchise.

Spider-Man franchise producer Amy Pascal will also be taking up the role of executive producer. She is also responsible for producing the Spider-Man movies in the MCU alongside Marvel Studios.

Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said in a statement: “Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Sony’s recent live-action and animated reimagining of the Spider-Man franchise has represented some of the most dynamic superhero storytelling in film.”

“Together with Angela Kang’s creative vision, we couldn’t be more pleased to bring Silk: Spider Society to our MGM+ and Prime Video customers,” she added.

“Angela is a pro’s pro whose perspective and creativity we greatly respect and admire. She’s also a hell of a lot of fun. She loves these characters and we feel really lucky for the chance to work with her to bring Cindy Moon’s story to the world,” said Lord and Miller.

Angela Kang also released a statement, saying: “I’m beyond thrilled to be joining the Amazon Studios family for this next chapter of my career. I look forward to working with the executive team on diverse, character-forward, watercooler shows for a global audience and am so excited to dive into my first challenge – bringing Korean-American superhero Silk to life on screen.”
