Thousands turned out for the New Year’s Eve (NYE) fireworks show at the Space Needle to ring in 2023, the first in-person show since 2019.
The midnight fireworks and music celebration, for the first time ever, featured drone light formations in the “skies to add more expression and color to one of the world’s largest structurally-launched firework displays,” according to the Space Needle.
The drone technology comes from Forth Worth, Texas-based Sky Elements. The firm’s first show in Seattle came after a Seattle Mariners game on July 22.
There were celebrations all over the city and people were gathering all over trying to find the best spot to see the show.
"This is the best view of Seattle," said Hugh who was celebrating NYE at Kerry Park, which is known to have a great view of the skyline.
For many who were out looking for the best view, this was the first time they’re experiencing the new year in the city.
"I want to study in Seattle, so I want to see this view of Seattle and to get a first hand impression," said Sylvie Wu, who is visiting Seattle from Singapore.
After the pandemic put a halt on all events, many are happy to see that people are going out again and that events are taking place.
"About a few years ago they stopped doing it unfortunately, but now it’s back and it’s supposed to be bigger and better than ever so I'm really excited," said Jacob Hadley, who was waiting for the NYE fireworks show.
Seattle Police Department said they were on high alert and are ramping up security. Police tell us they had officers throughout the city making sure everyone is safe.
For those who were counting down, they were already set with new goals for 2023.
"I want to improve my diet and cut down on sugar and reduce my carbs my doctor is on my case," said Hugh.
Around 25,000 people were expected at the fireworks show.
