Cartilage regeneration for osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a common joint disorder and major cause of disability and chronic pain, especially in ageing populations. However, there are no approved drugs to prevent disease progression. Writing in Nature Medicine, Gerwin et al. report that a derivative of angiopoietin-like 3 (ANGPTL3) promotes chondrogenesis and regenerates articular cartilage in animal models of osteoarthritis. Additionally, when injected into the knee of osteoarthritis patients, the protein penetrates cartilage and is well tolerated.
