There is a new push to make sure Boston Public Schools students of all abilities can be involved in sports.A unified basketball game was played at Brighton High School on Wednesday, as students with and without intellectual disabilities got to share the court.That unified basketball game was part of the celebration of a new partnership between Boston Public Schools and Special Olympics Massachusetts, as Special Olympics is making a $450,000 investment to bolster special education programming in Boston schools.That money will help provide inclusive programming for BPS students from pre-kindergarten through high school."One of the main reasons that I came to Brighton is because of the inclusion. I feel like it's really important to have inclusiveness in both schools and in sports," said Brighton High sophomore Simone Johnson.There are currently 22 Unified Champion Schools in the Boston Public Schools district. Those schools provide programming in unified sports in which athletes with and without disabilities can compete alongside one another; inclusive youth leadership, where students with and without disabilities work together to lead their school to be more welcoming to people of all backgrounds and abilities; and whole-school engagement through events or initiatives that rally students, faculty and staff to commit to being more inclusive.Related stories:
