NORTH COUNTY

Global Citizens get drive-by celebration

The North County African American Women’s Association’s Mentoring Program for eighth-grade girls was halted halfway through the term when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. However, the organization, led by President Raye Clendening, organized a drive-by “Grab and Go” recently for those in the group’s Becoming a Global Citizen program. Students drove to the King and Jefferson middle school parking lots, where their mentors-in-masks presented them with the Incentive Awards usually given at the end of each term. Some girls also received $50 and $25 bonuses, depending on their attendance and work. They were also given thank-you cards to be completed and sent to health care workers at Tri-City Hospital, since expressing gratitude is an important component of the mentoring program, led by Alma Sisco-Smith. Each student will also receive a special mask with a BGC 2020 inscription. The event was highlighted by one mentee who donated back her Incentive Award. The organization decided to recognize the student with a “Passing It Forward Certificate” for inspiring the Becoming a Global Citizen scholarship fund. SAN MARCOS

Palomar expands summer semester rolls

Palomar College is on track to have one of its busiest summers ever in terms of enrollment, as the number of students enrolled is now 4.7 percent higher than last year, with Full-Time Equivalent figures up by 7.5 percent. The numbers indicate that students are taking advantage of the newly expanded remote online learning offered. In early April, college officials announced the extension of remote learning for the summer semester, and in May announced plans to keep most classes online in the fall, with some labs resuming in-person instruction. The decisions were made to comply with California’s social-distancing measures during the nationwide COVID-19 crisis. The first four-week “Fast Track” classes of summer began May 26; another four-week session, along with six-week and eight-week options, begins Monday. A third and final Fast Track session runs July 20 through Aug. 14. See the class schedule at www2.palomar.edu/pages/schedule.
