Bordeaux fan storms pitch and gives opponent concussion as crucial Ligue 2 tie abandoned

Ugly scenes unfolded during Bordeaux's all-important Ligue 2 showdown with Rodez on Friday night.

Bordeaux's Ligue 2 clash with Rodez took a turn for the worse on Friday evening as a supporter found his way onto the pitch before pushing Lucas Buades to the ground. The Rodez player was stretchered off with a concussion and the match was finally abandoned after a lengthy stoppage.

The incident could hardly have happened at a worse time for Bordeaux, who had one last shot of clinching automatic promotion back to Ligue 1, with Rodez's visit to Matmut Atlantique their final game of the season.

They needed to better Metz's result to beat them into second spot, but when Buades put 17th-place Rodez ahead with a well-taken finish, a supporter ran onto the pitch and shoved the goalscorer.

With surreal footage circulating on social media, Buades appeared to hit his head on the turf after collapsing to the ground and he had to receive medical treatment. Match official Nicolas Rainville halted the match for over half an hour before calling an emergency press conference.

Rainville then explained that the match would not continue, with Buades suffering from a concussion. Some reports also indicate that the Frenchman was taken to hospital for checks.

Bordeaux now face a tense wait to discover whether they will have an opportunity to replay the match, or if they will be slapped with a forfeit defeat. LFP, French football's governing body, have called for a meeting on Monday to dissect the incident.

"Following the attack on the player Lucas Buades of Rodez by a supporter from the Bordeaux stand, the Bordeaux-Rodez meeting was officially stopped by the referee and the LFP delegates," read their statement.

"The LFP disciplinary commission will meet on Monday to study the follow-up. The LFP strongly condemns this act of violence against a player and wishes a speedy recovery to Lucas Buades."

Buades, a 25-year-old midfielder, came through the ranks with French outfit Nimes before joining Rodez in 2021. Despite taking the lead against Bordeaux, the team have struggled on the whole this season, winning only 10 of their 37 league matches.
