PROVIDENCE, RI — Rhode Island's coronavirus case numbers, deaths and hospitalizations, reaching the lowest numbers since April. As the state prepares to enter the third phase of reopening, Gov. Gina Raimondo said it's important to not let the improved data lull residents into a false sense of security, urging everyone to continue to follow mask-wearing and social distancing guidelines.

"If we all start going back to living the way we used to ... a lot of people are going to get sick again. It's a virtual certainty," Raimondo said.

"In the midst of the fatigue, we want to make sure no one becomes complacent," Alexander-Scott said. "The numbers we have should not be taken for granted."

Five deaths and 25 cases were reported Monday, following a weekend of low case numbers. In total, there were nine fatalities since Friday: two on Saturday, two on Sunday and five on Monday. Two of the victims were in their 50s, one in their 70s, two in their 80s, three in their 90s and one person older than 100 years old.

"In the midst of the fatigue, we want to make sure no one becomes complacent," Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott, the director of the Rhode Island Department of Health, said. "The numbers we have should not be taken for granted."

Rhode Island is also seeing progress in densely populated, urban communities, where percent positive rates have been well above the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention's 10 percent benchmark. As of Monday, Central Falls and Providence had percent positive rates of 8 percent, while Pawtucket was at four percent, a three-day average, Alexander-Scott said.
