Santa Rosa County deputy passes away after battle with illness

SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. -- The Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office announced the passing of Sgt. James Conkell on Thursday.

"He peacefully passed away today after battling illness," the sheriff's office said in a release. "Our hearts ache as we extend our sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues."

Sgt. Conkell, 46, spent 12 years with the department.

"Sgt. Conkell's dedication and spirit will be deeply missed," the sheriff's office says. "Please join us in keeping his loved ones in our thoughts and prayers during this challenging time."
