The “secret” to getting and staying in shape is often overcomplicated by fad diets and trending fitness routines. In reality, the key to staying fit is simple, according to Denise Austin. The 67-year-old and longtime fitness instructor shared exactly how in a new Instagram.

“I often get asked what the key is to getting and staying fit, and my number one answer is always… BE CONSISTENT!” she captioned the post. Like with any skincare routine, for example, it’s difficult to see results if you bop from regimen to regimen or take too many days off.

“Consistency is key when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle,” Austin continued. But she stressed that it doesn’t always equal perfection. In other words, it’s all about balance. “I have consistently exercised most days of the week and eat a balanced diet most of the time. It’s as simple as that!!” she wrote. “You are worth it, will feel better when that consistency becomes part of your routine without even thinking!!”

Austin recommended downloading her Denise Austin Fitness app to access the specific workouts and recipes she relies on “day in and day out.”

Fans thanked her for the simple, actionable advice. “So so true! ❤❤” one person commented. “You are my accountability coach!!!! 😍❤👏” another added. “Just when I needed the best of the best inspiration! Thankful you popped up, Denise! 👏” someone else wrote.

To be consistent, you have to start, of course, and Austin’s tips for getting motivated to work out are just as simple. “Start small—even a quick eight- to 10-minute workout is GREAT,” she wrote on Instagram. “Make it convenient—the best workout for you is the one you will do,” she continued. And lastly: “Schedule it!” she wrote. “If it’s on your calendar you are more likely to stick to it.”

If you’re not sure what workouts to start with, try a set of Austin’s low-impact burpees or her five-minute workout for heart health. Who knew getting fit could be so straightforward?
