Wicklow farmers and landowners invited to series of Teagasc webinars

Teagasc is inviting Wicklow farmers and landowners to a series of online seminars on topics including suckler breeding, artisanal food production, water quality and Teasgac’s new land-based apprenticeships.

On Wednesday, March 20, at 11 a.m., Teagasc will host a Land Based Apprenticeships webinar about the new land-based apprenticeships recently launched by Teagasc in partnership with SOLAS.

Attendees will gain valuable insights into the diverse opportunities awaiting in agriculture and horticulture, with information on the application process and the extensive benefits of pursuing an apprenticeship from a representative of SOLAS.

Teagasc currently offers four two-year apprenticeships: a Horticulturist Apprenticeship, a Sportsturf Management Apprenticeship, a Farm Technician Apprenticeship and a Farm Manager Apprenticeship.

The webinar will discuss the benefits of pursuing an apprenticeship with Teagasc and your career options afterwards, with real-life experiences from current apprentices and their employers as they share their personal journeys and learning experiences.

“This event will be informative for any student, employer or guardian considering a career in agriculture, horticulture and wider agriculture industry and is not to be missed,” A Teagasc spokesperson said.

On the same date, at 8 p.m., Teagasc’s Future Beef team will host a ‘Farmers’ Guide to Suckler Breeding’ webinar focused on achieving key breeding targets, with topics including the benefits of compact calving, ‘Best cow not in calf, what will you do?’, the carbon footprint on your farm and Cow Body Condition Score during housing.

The webinar will be chaired by Martina Harrington, Future Beef Programme Manager, and feature Shane Keaveney and Ruairi Cummins, Future Beef Farmers, Colin Byrne, Teagasc Beef Researcher, Grange Research Centre, with panellists interviewed by Gabriel Trayers, Teagasc Future Beef Programme Advisor.

On Thursday, March 21, at 10 a.m., an enlightening webinar entitled ‘Taste of Innovation: Unlocking Artisanal Potential on the Farm’ will feature Dr Deirdre Kennedy, Artisan and Small Food Sector based at Teagasc Food Research Centre, Moorepark, who will explore the exciting world of artisanal food production.

“Discover how farmers can leverage Teagasc supports, technology, collaboration, and sustainable practices to add value to their operations,” the Teagasc spokesperson said.

“Don't miss this opportunity to gain invaluable insights and inspiration for your farm business.”

Teagasc’s ‘Signpost Series Webinar’, a series of weekly environment webinars aimed at the Irish agri industry, will continue on Friday, March 22 at 9.30 a.m. with a seminar on Water quality and agriculture challenges and opportunities.

The webinar will feature guest speaker Dr. Jenny Deakin, Senior Catchment Scientist, EPA.

Finally, on Monday, March 25, at 8 p.m., Teagasc’s Future Beef team will return with a webinar focused on farmers' experience of new technologies, with topics including heat detection, synchronisation, AI, and optimise chances for Bull NCT, records for breeding, observation and simple ways of heat detection.

The webinar will be chaired by Martina Harrington, Future Beef Programme Manager, and feature John Dunne and Aonghusa Fahy, Future Beef Farmers and David Kenny, Head of the Teagasc Animal Bioscience Research Centre.

Panellists will be interviewed by Aisling Molloy, Teagasc Future Beef Programme Advisor.
