WATER RESOURCES INCLUDING ACEQUIAS AND COMMUNITY PROJECTS. WELL, AS WE CELEBRATE WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH, WE ARE RECOGNIZING THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF NEW MEXICANS AND TODAY, THE STORY OF A UNIQUE PROGRAM AT LOS ALAMOS NATIONAL LAB ENGAGING INDIGENOUS WOMEN IN PHYSICS. I AM A MEMBER OF THE CHEYENNE RIVER SIOUX TRIBE, BORN ON THE NAVAJO RESERVATION IN SHIPROCK, NEW MEXICO. I AM FROM A PART OF THE JEANNETTE TRIBE. I GREW UP OUT ON THE RESERVATION IN WINDOW ROCK, ARIZONA, MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, NO RUNNING WATER, ELECTRICITY. I AM FROM THE NAVAJO, THE JEANNETTE TRIBE CONNECTING INDIGENOUS WOMEN WITH A FUTURE IN PHYSICS. I’M A COMPUTER ENGINEERING STUDENT WORKING ON MY BACHELOR’S WITH PHYSICS AND THEN MINORING IN MATHEMATICS. I’VE KIND OF ALWAYS HAD A PASSION FOR PHYSICS. LOOKING UP AT THE STARS ON THE RESERVATION AND WONDERING WHERE IT ALL CAME FROM WITH A GOAL OF GETTING MORE INDIGENOUS WOMEN INVOLVED. WE’RE SEEING MORE WOMEN IN STEM FIELDS CURRENTLY. HOWEVER, WHEN YOU ADD THE INDIGENOUS COMPONENT, THERE ARE FAR LESS INDIGENOUS WOMEN. RIGHT NOW. FOUR WOMEN ARE PARTICIPATING IN THE PROGRAM. A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN LOS ALAMOS NATIONAL LAB AND FORT LEWIS COLLEGE IN DURANGO. EACH OF THEM INTERNING AT THE LAB CONDUCTING RESEARCH ALONGSIDE LOS ALAMOS PHYSICISTS THAT RESEARCH EVEN TAKING THEM ACROSS THE GLOBE TO THE CENTER FOR EUROPEAN RESEARCH IN SWITZERLAND. THE OPPORTUNITY THAT THIS HAS PROVIDED. HAS BEEN AMAZING, LIKE GOING OUT OF THE COUNTRY TO VISIT THESE OTHER EXPERIMENTS, WORKING IN COLLABORATIONS WITH THE REST. OF THE WORLD, PEOPLE FROM ALL AROUND THE WORLD, THE THE INDIGENOUS WOMEN PROGRAM AT LOS ALAMOS HAS MADE ME FEEL MORE HEARD AS AN INDIVIDUAL. ROYALE THE PROGRAM, NOW IN ITS THIRD YEAR OPENING DOORS. THESE WOMEN NEVER THOUGHT POSSIBLE. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I NEVER REALLY FELT LIKE I HAD THE OPTION TO TO PURSUE SOMETHING LIKE A PHYSICS DEGREE AND EXPANDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE FUTURE. IT’S OPENED UP A WORLD THAT I DIDN’T REALIZE EXISTED AND AND I WANT TO GO TO GRADUATE SCHOOL. I WANT TO PURSUE MY EDUCATION, AND I WANT TO BECOME A PHYSICIST. I SEE THIS PROGRAM LEADING ME TO A BETTER FUTURE FOR NOT ONLY MYSELF, BUT MY SON. SO THE INDIGENOUS PROGRAM AT LOS ALAMOS HAS BEEN BY FAR THE MOST INFLUENTIAL EXPERIENCE I’VE EVER BEEN A PART OF DEVELOPING THE NEXT GENERATION OF SCIENTISTS. BREANA ALBIZU KOAT ACTION SEVEN NEWS.
