Advisory issued on school safety in Texas from Texas Attorney General's office

It’s a clarification to a new state law requiring districts to follow certain security protocols.

AUSTIN, Texas —  An advisory has been issued on school safety in Texas. It’s a clarification to a new state law requiring districts to follow certain security protocols, and how parents can hold their student’s campuses accountable for them.

This list was released by the Office of the Attorney General. Its goal is to educate parents on the new legal requirments districts have to follow.

A number of these laws were enacted in response to the shooting at Robb Elementary.

One law requires an armed security officer is present at each public school campus. Districts can opt out but they must develop an alternate plan to ensure student safety.

Another law let’s school districts allow employees to arm themselves through a marshal program.

Every school district is also required to have a emergency response plan. This includes a plan for active-shooter scenarios, which can be verified by the Texas School Safety Center.

Lastly, parents who believe their districts are not following the new laws can file a complaint with the TEA.

However, evidence may be requested before a complaint can be reviewed.
