Shawneetown Regional Port District board voted to create a resolution that would oppose Senate Bill 3654

GALLATIN COUNTY, Ill. (WSIL)--- Many people came out to the Shawneetown Regional Port board meeting tonight. They were there to talk about Senate Bill 3654.

The bill would give the Shawnee Port District the right to regulate public or city property within 7,000 feet of the Ohio River.

Some business owners and residents shared their concerns during the meeting and wanted the Port Board to take action.

"I thought it went fairly good for the village. And just to get rid of the bill, and to get the port board to say hey, we oppose it, even though it's just 3 of them. That's great," Old Shawneetown Village President William Barton said.

Members of the Port Board voted in favor of creating a resolution opposing the Senate bill from taking power away from local government.

Some locals say they aren't against economic development; they do not like the Senate bill.

"I'm for the port if it is a good decision for the community. But the information that we have been given so far, I don't see where it's gonna lead to long-term jobs," Kia Oldham said.

Another meeting will be held on March 11th to see if an agreement can be reached.
