Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton urged the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday to deny a student group’s request to host a drag show fundraiser on campus this month, saying such performances do not amount to First Amendment-protected expression.

Paxton’s written argument came in response to an emergency request filed last week by a student LGTBQ rights group at West Texas A&M University. The group, Spectrum WT, has been fighting to stage its charity drag show since last March but has been rebuffed by school president Walter Wendler, who has opposed such performances as “derisive, divisive, and demoralizing” and denigrating to women.
