July 2, 1933—Feb. 22, 2024
LA PORTE CITY—Dorothy Nation, 90, of La Porte City, Iowa, passed away peacefully in her home on Thursday, February 22, 2024.
Dorothy Nation was born on July 2, 1933, in Grainfield, Kansas and was raised on a farm near Hoxie, Kansas. She was the youngest of eight children, seven girls and one boy, born to Clarence and Ruth Vickers.
Her grade school years were spent in a one room country schoolhouse in Sheridan County, Kansas. She attended Sheridan Community High School, graduating in 1950, after which she attended Parks Business College in Denver, Colorado for one year.
In her younger days, Dorothy enjoyed sharing being around horses and traveling with her sister, Charlotte, while working as a secretary in Colorado, Wyoming, and California before marrying Jack Nation on December 18, 1953, in Los Angeles, California.
The couple made their home in Carson, California, where Dorothy stayed at home and raised their son, Jackie, and five daughters, Vicki, Tammi, Lorri, Conni, and Sherri. In 1976, they moved to Dallas, TX where Jack went to Christ for the Nations Institute to prepare for serving in the ministry. They eventually found their way to Iowa, settling in Waverly, Iowa in 1986, where Jack became the Senior Pastor of Waverly Open Bible Church.
In addition to her life as a pastor’s wife, Dorothy loved working with friends at Workforce Development Corporation of Iowa for fifteen years, retiring in July 2000.
Many knew Dorothy to be full of joy, a prayer warrior, and a spiritual mom. In a heartbeat, she would drop everything to intercede for anyone who asked, no matter the time of day or night.
She pointed her children, grandchildren, and all she met to the Lord, leaving a legacy of love and faithfulness to Jesus Christ.
She loved her husband well and was dedicated to their girls, giving them unconditional love and support throughout the years.
Dorothy was truly a bright light, shining the light and love of the Lord in this dark world.
Dorothy is survived by her sister, Vivian Wade of Monument, KS; her five daughters and their husbands: Vicki and Jim Webster of Waverly, IA, Tammi and Richard Mann of Greensboro, NC, Lorri and Ron Rottinghaus of La Porte City, IA, Conni Kujanson of Milford, IA, Sherri and David Black of Mt. Pleasant, IA; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at Life Church in Waverly, Iowa. A private burial of cremains will be held in Harlington Cemetery.
