PETALING JAYA: Exploit the pressure and the reward will come.

That was the message delivered by Omani striker Omar Al-Malki to his teammates before taking on Malaysia in the return fixture of the World Cup 2026-Asian Cup 2027 second-round qualifier against Malaysia on Tuesday.

Realising that Malaysia needed a win in front of their home fans at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, the 30-year-old Al-Nahda striker knew being clinical and efficient would pay dividends.

It worked as his nation took down Harimau Malaya 2-0, with Al-Malki scoring the first goal in the 45th minute.

The other goal was scored by Mubarak Al-Ghafri in the 90th minute.

“Malaysia did start well but we did put pressure from the beginning, ensuring that we created more chances and towards the end of the first half, we got the penalty,” he said.

“Malaysia are a strong side but we came up with a good plan and got it done. Plus Malaysia were under pressure after the previous defeat in Muscat, Oman.

“To do it in that atmosphere in Bukit Jalil with Malaysian fans rallying their side on, so it’s good to come out victorious.

His coach Jaroslav Silhavy felt that the challenge in Kuala Lumpur was tougher compared to the one in Muscat.

“This game was difficult, not like the one we played in Oman. We created chances but needed goals in the dying minutes of each half. The effort was always there, so I am proud of the boys.”

The former Czech Republic coach also said the poor pitch condition in Bukit Jalil was a factor as well but his boys adapted to the conditions.

“I think this problem was faced by both teams. But didn’t feel these difficulties at all because we adapted to it quickly.

“We aimed to give our best and make a good competition. We are here today because of teamwork.”

Oman are now second in Group D with nine points but similar in points with Kyrgyzstan, who are top of the group with a better goal difference.
